Surge is offering two bursaries for new physical theatre work suitable for live indoor performance to emerging, Scotland-based artists and companies.

The chosen artists/companies will be given a budget of £3000 towards the creation of the piece plus mentoring from Surge. The piece will be presented as a 20/30 minute work-in-progress double bill at Manipulate Festival in early February 2025.

We are particularly interested in ideas that explore innovative visual language, storytelling without words and/or animating the inanimate. We are also interested in work that incorporates technology with live performance, although this is not essential.

Requirements:

  • Present an idea for a new small-scale indoor physical theatre piece;

  • The piece needs to be suitable for performance in a theatre setting;

  • The performers and creative team need to be available for rehearsal periods between November 2024 and February 2025. Specific dates will be discussed upon offer;

  • To be available for a performance at Manipulate Festival in February 2025.

We will offer:

  • Mentorship in the creation and delivery of the work

  • £3000 budget

  • Performance opportunity at Manipulate Festival 2025

  • Travel budget for performances

  • Rehearsal and creation space

  • Mentorship on an application to Creative Scotland, if required.

To apply:

Please email your proposal (max. 500 words) and one short bio for each performer/collaborator (max. 100 words each), in one document, to Alan Richardson on alan@surge.scot

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Alan on alan@surge.scot, we can arrange a phone or video call.

The application deadline is 5pm on Wednesday 23rd October 2024.
